Positioned within the Japanese catchment zone of the Vrishabhavathi Reservoir in Southwestern rural Bangalore are two water our bodies, specifically the Amavasya Kere and the Thumbin Kere. Quickly creating industrial areas and commercialization of agriculture with dairy items and personal farms home mushrooming up, restoration of those waterbodies is essential for preserving the native ecology and lifeform depending on it.
Resulting from an absence of correct upkeep and neglect, each lakes have suffered from agricultural encroachment, rubbish dumping, extreme progress of invasive weeds, heavy silt deposition, and weakened structural integrity.
E.F.I with HCCB, and the Authorities of Karnataka joined collectively to revive
Tumkur’s valuable water our bodies and our dedication to #CareForKere.
Actions executed on the sector on the two lakes:
- Desilting: Elimination of extra silt deposited through the years throughout the lake floor was carries on to extend the storage capability and floor water percolation charge.
- Deweeding: Owing to years of negligence and no correct upkeep, invasive weeds akin to Prosopis juliflora, and overgrown thorny shrubs have been cleared from the lake utilizing equipment.
- Bund Strengthening and Formation: The embankments of the lakes have been discovered to be broken, and irregular in form resulting from extra siltation deposits. Utilizing excavators, the surplus silt deposits have been compacted, thereby strengthening the bunds to make sure optimum storage of water on the lakes.
- Nesting Island Creation: Utilizing the surplus silt, nesting islands have been created on the lakes to supply nesting grounds for native fauna akin to birds, reptiles and amphibians.
- Trench Work: To enhance and regulate the stream of water inside the lake, a shallow channel was created for roughly 180 m.
- Protecting Fencing: To determine authorized boundary of the lake stopping encroachment and to cut back human interventions.
