On the eve of Goa Liberation Day, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday (December 18, 2024) honoured the members of the family of those that sacrificed their lives through the motion to finish Portuguese colonial rule within the coast State.
Speaking to reporters after the felicitation perform, the Chief Minister mentioned the State authorities had paid tribute to its martyrs whose members of the family had been introduced with a certificates of honour and financial advantages.
The Goa Liberation Day is widely known on December 19 yearly to mark the success of ‘Operation Vijay’ undertaken by the armed forces in 1961 to liberate the State from Portugal.
Mr. Sawant mentioned he had the honour of visiting and felicitating the “ veerpatni of martyr Karnail Singh Benipal in Haryana whose contribution to the battle stays etched in our hearts”.
The households of a number of freedom fighters had been additionally honoured on Wednesday.
Among the martyrs whose households had been felicitated had been Bala Raya Mapari, Basavraj Hudgi, Sheshnath Wadekar, Tulshiram Balkrishna Hirve, Baburao Keshav Thorat, Sakharam Shirodkar, Rohidas Mapari, Yeshwant Agarwadekar, Ramchandra Nevgi, Bapu Vishnu Gavas, Babla Parab, Laxman Velingkar, Keshavbhai Tengse, and Parshuram Acharya.
‘450 years of tyranny’
Mr. Sawant mentioned that Goa endured practically 450 years of “despotic and oppressive Portuguese colonial rule”. He added, “The resilient spirit of the Goan folks and people from neighbouring areas and States was behind the rebellion in opposition to colonial tyranny.”
The CM additionally mentioned that the coastal State’s battle for liberation after India’s Independence was notably important as freedom fighters from throughout the nation joined fingers with the Goans.
“On this valiant battle, 74 courageous souls made the final word sacrifice and the popularity and felicitation by our authorities displays our unwavering dedication to honour and bear in mind the sacrifices of those freedom fighters and their households,” he added.
