Theethampatti is a small village situated within the northern a part of Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) District, Tamil Nadu. Identified for its harsh summers and scarce rainfall, this area is dotted with interconnected water our bodies, seasonal streams, and rivers. It is usually surrounded by farmlands, huge open grasslands, and lakes, all of which have been traditionally established to seize and retailer rainwater from the uncommon monsoons for future use.
Positioned within the Theethampatti village, Periyakulam is among the most important water our bodies within the area. Surrounded by farmlands and bordered by a rising residential neighborhood to the north, this lake has lengthy served as an important supply of irrigation for the native agrarian group.
However like many conventional water our bodies throughout the nation, Theethampatti Periyakulam started to endure from neglect. As urbanization picked up tempo and age-old water administration practices light into the previous, the group’s reference to the lake weakened. What adopted was years of rubbish dumping, extreme progress of invasive weeds, and heavy silt accumulation. These points drastically lowered the lake’s water-holding capability and disrupted the fragile steadiness of its ecosystem.

E.F.I took on the duty of reviving this water physique with
administrative assist from the Thoothukudi District Administration.
Rubbish that had been dumped alongside the periphery of the lake was utterly eliminated. Over 5 tons of invasive weeds, together with Ipomoea carnea and Prosopis juliflora, have been uprooted and cleared from the lake ecosystem to advertise the expansion of native bushes and crops. Round 5 acres of the lake space have been desilted to a depth of 4 toes. The eliminated silt was used to create 644 meters of foreshore embankment, enhancing the lake’s structural integrity and clearly demarcating its boundaries within the foreshore area.
Moreover, recharge pits, nesting islands, and native tree plantations are being established to reinforce water retention capability and promote biodiversity in and across the lake.

Theethampatti Periyakulam, with its vibrant crimson soil, deepened lakebed, strengthened embankments, recharge pits, and nesting islands, is now able to retailer extra water
than ever earlier than, supporting the encompassing farmlands, native flora, and thriving fauna.
